Art Deco Clothing

The art deco movement saw a dramatic change in womens clothing during the late 20's and early 30's.
Since before the war women had campaigned for more right to choose. During the war with all the men out fighting for their country women came out of the home and into the factories. The end of the war saw the exposition internationale des arts decoratifs et industriels modernes (International exposition of modern industrial and decorative arts) held in Paris in 1925. This was the beginning of the art deco movement. The chic style and vibrant colours soon spread to womens clothing. Especially in the 30's when America introduced the art deco style into it's movies. We of course now know this as film noir. The influence film noir had over the women's clothing in the 30's was immence, rising dress lines, lower neck lines and open back's became common place.
Vibrant colours and new materials like leather and rayon were being used in the design of women's clothing. By the end of the 30's when the depression began so did the styles. Women were seen as taking men's jobs and were quickly moved back into the home leaving their jobs and lifestyle behind.
As the art deco period ended so did the designs. Financially unable to support the chic look of art deco designs women took to more formal and modernistic designs. |
